How Many Solar Panels Do I Need for a 5kW Solar System in South Africa?

Find out how many solar panels you need for a 5kW solar system in South Africa, including 450W–620W panel examples, roof space, PV oversizing, batteries and inverter limits.

If you are planning a 5kW solar system in South Africa, one of the first questions is simple: how many solar panels do I need?

For a modern residential system, a practical starting point is usually around 9–10 panels using 550W modules. That gives approximately 4.95–5.50kWp of solar capacity. However, the final panel count depends on the inverter, roof space, electricity usage, shading, panel wattage and how much solar energy you want the system to produce.

Current South African sizing guides commonly use around 9–10 × 550W panels as a reference for a 5kW system, while some designs deliberately use a slightly larger PV array to improve generation outside the strongest midday period.

What does a 5kW solar system actually mean?

The term “5kW solar system” can be confusing because it may refer to the inverter's AC output rating rather than the exact total wattage of the panels.

For example, a system could have:

  • a 5kW hybrid inverter
  • 10 × 550W solar panels
  • a 5.5kWp solar array
  • a lithium battery sized according to the home's backup requirements

In this example, the inverter is rated at 5kW while the panels total 5.5kWp. This is a normal design approach when the inverter manufacturer permits the specified PV input.

How many solar panels do I need for 5kW?

The basic calculation is:

Number of panels = desired PV capacity ÷ panel wattage

Panel wattagePanels for approximately 5kWpApprox. PV capacity
450W11–124.95–5.40kWp
500W105.00kWp
550W9–104.95–5.50kWp
580W95.22kWp
600W95.40kWp
620W8–94.96–5.58kWp

These are planning examples rather than a final electrical design. Panel voltage, current, string configuration and the inverter's MPPT limits all need to be checked before a panel count is confirmed.

Why do some 5kW systems have more than 5kW of panels?

Solar panels do not produce their nameplate output continuously. Real-world production is affected by sunlight intensity, panel temperature, orientation, shading, dust, wiring and inverter losses.

For that reason, an installer may specify a PV array that is somewhat larger than the inverter's AC rating. For example, 10 × 550W panels provide 5.5kWp on a 5kW inverter.

Modest PV oversizing can help keep the inverter supplied with useful solar power for more hours of the day. The inverter's maximum DC input power, voltage, current and MPPT limits must always be respected.

Is 10 × 550W better than 9 × 550W?

Not automatically. Both can be sensible designs.

9 × 550W = 4.95kWp, which is almost exactly 5kW of panel capacity.

10 × 550W = 5.50kWp, which provides more PV capacity and may improve energy production during less-than-ideal solar conditions.

The correct choice depends on the inverter's specifications, roof layout, electricity consumption and the amount of generation required. Ten panels also require more roof space and may not fit on a particular roof without changing the layout.

How much roof space does a 5kW solar system need?

Modern 500–620W panels are physically larger than many older residential panels. A broad planning allowance for a 5kW system might be around 20–30m² of usable roof area, depending on the panel size and layout.

For example, 10 × 550W panels may occupy roughly 24–26m² once a practical layout is considered. The exact requirement depends on the dimensions of the chosen panel and the roof.

The usable area can be much smaller than the total roof area because the installer must work around:

  • roof edges
  • ridges and valleys
  • chimneys and skylights
  • trees and other shading
  • roof-mounted equipment
  • safe access and installation clearances

Does my electricity usage determine how many panels I need?

Yes. The inverter size and panel count should ultimately be based on the property's electricity consumption and the loads you want solar to support.

A 5kW system can be a practical starting point for a smaller or average South African home, but the actual suitability depends on usage. High-demand loads such as geysers, electric stoves, pool pumps and air conditioners need to be considered separately.

Look at your electricity bills over the previous 12 months and identify your biggest loads. A home using a modest amount of electricity may not need the same PV array as a home with a pool, multiple air conditioners, an electric geyser and frequent daytime usage.

Can a 5kW solar system run a geyser?

It can, but the answer depends on the geyser size, the other loads operating at the same time, the inverter's output and whether the geyser is managed to operate when solar generation is available.

A typical 5kW inverter cannot necessarily run every major appliance simultaneously. A good system design therefore considers peak demand as well as total daily energy consumption.

If the geyser is one of your largest electricity users, the installer may recommend load management, a heat pump, solar geyser integration or a larger system rather than simply adding more panels to a 5kW inverter.

Do I need a battery with a 5kW solar system?

No. Panels can reduce daytime grid consumption without a large battery, depending on the system configuration and local grid-connection requirements.

A battery becomes particularly useful when your goal includes backup power during outages or load shedding, or when a significant part of your electricity consumption occurs after sunset.

A 5kW system might be paired with a 5kWh, 10kWh or larger battery depending on which loads need backup and how long you want them to run. Battery capacity and inverter power are different specifications: a large battery does not automatically mean the inverter can supply a large instantaneous load.

What about single-phase and three-phase homes?

Many residential 5kW systems are designed around single-phase supplies, but the property's existing electrical installation must be checked before the equipment is selected.

If your home has a three-phase supply, the inverter and backup arrangement need to be designed around that configuration. Do not assume that a single-phase 5kW inverter can simply be connected to a three-phase property in the same way.

What happens if my roof cannot fit enough panels?

A roof with limited usable area does not necessarily mean solar is impossible.

Higher-wattage panels can provide more generation from fewer modules. For example, nine 600W panels provide approximately 5.4kWp, while eleven 450W panels provide approximately 4.95kWp.

However, higher-wattage panels are not automatically the best choice. Their physical dimensions, voltage and current characteristics still need to match the inverter and roof layout.

What should I ask for when getting a 5kW solar quotation?

Don't compare quotations based only on the words “5kW solar system”. Ask the installer to specify:

  • exact inverter make and model
  • number and wattage of panels
  • total PV capacity in kWp
  • maximum inverter PV input
  • MPPT voltage and current limits
  • battery make, model and usable capacity if included
  • which circuits will operate during an outage
  • AC and DC protection
  • mounting system and cabling
  • installation and commissioning
  • Certificate of Compliance and applicable requirements
  • equipment and workmanship warranties

This makes it much easier to compare two quotations that may both be advertised as “5kW” but use different equipment and specifications.

How much does a 5kW solar system cost?

The number of panels is only one part of the system price. A 5kW system without a battery is different from a complete hybrid system with 5–10kWh of lithium storage, installation and backup capability.

Current South African published market guides place complete 5kW systems across a broad range depending on battery size, equipment and installation scope. Recent published examples include roughly R75,000–R120,000 for many mainstream configurations, while premium systems or larger batteries can cost more. These figures are broad market references, not Solar8 pricing.

For a meaningful quotation, the property, electrical installation, roof, electricity usage and backup requirements need to be assessed together.

What is the best number of panels for a 5kW system?

For many modern South African residential designs, 9–10 × 550W panels is a useful starting point for a 5kW-class system. Ten panels provide 5.5kWp and may offer useful headroom where the inverter permits it.

But there is no universal panel count. A 5kW system might use 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 panels depending on panel wattage and the intended PV capacity.

The right design balances panel capacity, inverter limits, roof space, electricity consumption, shading, battery storage and your backup requirements.
